Web Crawlers or Search Spiders, the Key Force Behind the Rise of Search Engines

Its continuous growth helped fueling the Web’s expansion by creating a new way of navigating text based search.

Search engines technology is heavily rely on Web Crawlers or search spiders, the key force behind the rise of search engines which played a pivotal role in developing effective use of search on the World-Wide Web. For at least two decades they have gradually played a primary role in making the Web easier to use for hundreds of millions people. Its creation and succeeding growth helped fueling the Web’s expansion by creating a new way of navigating text based search.

Crawler Contributions To Search

Crawler/Spider broke ground in several important ways but let focus on some of the major:
1. It helps search engine to broadly index the Web.
2. Crawler introduced the concept of carefully choosing a division of the web to index. Indexing the entire Web is difficult. All search engines index a compartment of the web documents.
3. Crawler allows inexperienced searchers to effortlessly find documents on the web.
4. Crawler generates a more useful relevance ranking by combining traditional full text methods with metadata found on the web. The results ranked by authority & information recovery are on the basis of the relevance of those results to the searcher’s query. Crawler takes advantage of extra information including the structure of the web, to polish relevance ranking.

Web Search Engines & Hypertext Searching System: Background & Reality

With the surfacing of the Web, most of the early Internet resource discovery systems lost its significance. This despite the fact that web had several advantages over these early systems, it made publishing documents easy and, most importantly  it made browsing documents and following links even easier .
However the fact is that a web is a large hypertext system but what lacks is a universal way to find information. Since they were constructed by humans their quality was equally good, but they leaned to be out of date and not very broad.

Today We Arrived At New Era of Meta Searching

With the arrival of new multiple Internet search engines generally recognized as meta search engines. Their key job is to support multiple search engines remotely to satisfy a single searcher’s request. From a searcher’s perspective, meta-search is currently desirable because each search engine although overlapping in content with others has some unique content in its index. Meta search engines also produce the relevance ranking methods and as a result they come up with most relevant  results.

Search engines are answer machines they work on the mechanics of find-ability. So when any one looks for anything online, they normally requires the search engines to identify the best  out of billions of documents and do two things – 1st they return only those results that are relevant or useful to the searcher’s query  and 2nd  rank those results in order according to their authority on the subject.
Search engines automated robots, called “crawlers,” or “spiders” can reach the many billions of unified documents .Once the engines find these pages and store/index selected pieces in massive hard drives to be recalled later when needed for a search query. Furthermore, in order to holding back billions of pages that can be recalled in a split seconds, the search engines have constructed data centers all over the world.
