A former creative director at Google and now at Facebook, Ji Lee, wrote a book named Word as Image
containing just 100 words. But these words-images don’t use any
graphic content except the elements of the letters in the word itself.
According to Lee, thus project started about 20 years ago when he got an
assignment in typography class. He was really amazed how the letters
can be modified to shapes giving infinite many possibilities. From there
on, Lee took this art as a lifelong project for himself.
‘When we were children, letters were like
fun toys. We played with them through our building blocks and we colored
them in books. Soon, letters turned into words. Words turned into
sentences. Sentences turned into thoughts. And along the way, we stopped
playing with them and stopped marveling at A through Z. Word as Image brings a little magic back to the alphabet by helping us see the fun and humor behind the lines and squiggles’ – Ji Lee.
